MCJ starts cleaning sewerage with super-sucker machine

JALANDHAR: Gearing up for the monsoon, the Jalandhar Municipal Corporatio­n (MC) on Tuesday started cleaning of sewerages with super-sucker machine in Danishmand­a and Basti Sheikh localities of the city. The machine is equipped with the latest technology and CCTV cameras.

Officials said considerin­g the threat of water-borne diseases from sewer overflow the MC has decided to clean old sewerages, which were not cleaned properly in the past several years.

The civic body arranged the machine after roping in private players. Mayor Sunil Jyoti and MC commission­er Gurpreet Singh Khehra along with the operation and maintenanc­e cell team inspected the working of the machine at Danishmand­a.

Lakhwinder Singh, superinten­ding engineer, MC’s operation and maintenanc­e cell, said, “The machine will clear sewerages that have not been cleaned for years. We have given the contract to a Mohali-based firm to do the cleaning job in some of the most affected localities. The company will take two to three months to clean these sewerages.”

Singh further said the machine is fitted on a special truck worth ` 30 crore which also a set of water sucker and generator. It is equipped with a six-inch wide pipe that will suck the waste.
