Former KU V-C opposes continuation of Haryana govt inquiry against him

CHANDIGARH: A d ay after Kurukshetra University (KU) vice-chancellor, Lt Gen DDS Sandhu (retd), resigned from his post, he questioned the continuation of inquiry against him before the Punjab and Haryana high court on Wednesday.

As the hearing began, additional solicitor general of India, Satya Pal Jain, who appeared on behalf of the government as well as the chancellor of the university and Haryana governor Kaptan Singh Solanki, told the court that Sandhu had resigned and his resignation had been accepted.

However, when Sandhu’s counsel argued that the enquiry against him initiated on the orders of chancellor could not continue as he ceases to be an employee.

Jain, however, argued before the court that he needed to study this aspect. The factual position is that Sandhu has resigned. But enquiry and allegations of irregularities are of the time when he was employed. Whether any criminal action is required to be taken or not, it needed to be studied, Jain said asking the court to grant him some time to study the case. To this, the high court bench of justice Ajay Tewari posted the matter for further hearing for July 30.

Sandhu had approached the high court following the chancellor ordering an enquiry against Sandhu on allegations of misuse of power and irregularities during the tenure of the Congress government.

Sandhu had termed it the result of “political vendetta” because he was appointed during the Congress regime and stated that the exercise was carried out to remove him from the post. In May, the Haryana governor, being the chancellor of the university, was also impleaded as party in the case on the application of Sandhu.
