A career in IT offers a range of job prospects

I am a Class 10 student preparing for the Joint Entrance Exam. Can I take science with economics in Class 11? I am planning to pursue a career in information technology (IT)? Please suggest suitable courses that can help me pursue a career in IT and throw some light on job prospects in the field.

If you are looking forward to a career in information technology (IT) , you can take up science with economics. IT is a field where there is an increasing demand for professionals with a variety of computer-specific qualifications for jobs which vary according to the different requirements of IT companies. Depending on your interest and your capability to handle both the newer technologies and the pace of growth, you can take up an engineering programme in IT, computer science or electronics and communications. Computer science is a theoretical field, in which you will learn about the fundamentals of programming languages, a large variety of information theory and algorithm theory, how to design a software programme, and so on. A course in IT includes more of software – usually dealing with databases, business, and accounting, while electronics and telecommunications engineers deal with communication, audio and video communication, and applications of electronic components and materials. If you do not do engineering, you can also do BSc IT or BSc computer science, or a bachelor of computer applications. These courses are open to students who have maths without science.

Look out for certification courses at computer institutes in areas such as networking, database administration or cyber security. There are growing jobs in digital technologies.
