ROHTAK: The alleged mastermind behind the leak of answer keys in All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) conducted on May 3, 2015 was on Thursday arrested by Police in Rohtak.
Accused Roop Singh Dangi (33) was on the run since May 2015 and was declared proclaimed offender by the police. He was nabbed from Bahadurgarh bypass on Jakhoda Road, from where he was reportedly coming towards Rohtak city in a Nissan car.
An FIR under sections 420, 467, 468, 471and 120B of the IPC was registered against Dangi at PGIMS police station on May 4, 2015. The police had also announced an award of `1 lakh on him. Rohtak superintendent of police (SP) Shashank Anand said, “The most wanted criminal has been arrested by the police CIA-2. The police had got secret information about his whereabouts after which he was nabbed from Bahadurgarh bypass. We will produce him in the court tomorrow and will try to seek maximum remand.”
Anand said that besides the AIPMT leak, Dangi had also been involved in the paper leaks of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) examination, IIT-JEE exam and Kurukshetra University exam. “There is a possibility that he may have been planning to do more such crimes,” Anand said, adding that investigations were on look into the role of officials who might be involved in leaking the question papers. On the modus operandi of the crimes committed, Anand said, “Dangi had formed a big gang and had agents across the country who contacted the candidates and their family members to buy answer keys for as much as `15 lakh to `20 lakh. He had collected master solvers of AIPMT exam in a resort in Behror town of Rajasthan and used SIM cards bought on fake IDs to contact candidates to supply answer keys.
He had used modern wireless technology to carry out the crimes. The police had also arrested the person who supplied him Bluetooth-fitted undergarments.”
The accused candidates in the case were arrested from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Northeastern states, confirming the involvement of Dangi in such crimes across the country, the SP added.
As many as 30 people have been arrested in the leak of answer keys of the AIPMT exam in 2015, with Dangi being the 31st.
All the people against whom an FIR was registered have been arrested. However, investigations have suggested the role of more accused. A resident of Madina village in Rohtak, Dangi had joined Gramin Cooperative Bank as sub-inspector in 2007, however was suspended in 2013, a police spokesperson told HT.
An SIT was formed to investigate the case under DSP Amit Bhatia, who recently got transferred in the aftermath of Jat agitation, after which the case was handed over to DSP Ravinder, he added. The AIPMT examination was held on May 3 across 1,050 centres across the country. There were reports of irregularities, mass copying and paper leak, but the CBSE released a statement that no leak of AIPMT answer keys happened. However, taking view of irregularities and paper leak reports in Haryana, the Supreme Court (SC) issued a notice to the Haryana Police to find out the beneficiaries of the irregularities to avoid the need of holding the examination once again.
