Now unruly scenes at Captain’s meet in Hoshiarpur
HOSHIARPUR: Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh’s meeting with party workers on Thursday was marked by unruly scenes. What started off as an impressive gathering at a local marriage palace ended on a notso pleasant note as most of the workers who had come from different assembly constituents to interact with their leader left before his formal address.
On Wednesday, similar scenes were witnessed in Amritsar where the PPCC chief held a meeting with party workers.
Some of the speakers took too long to express their views whereas others did not get a chance to say a word. Unrest was palpable as some people vented their anger at being ‘discriminated against’. “Why were we called if they did not want us to speak?” a party worker said. Amarinder tried to pacify them stating it was not possible to let everyone speak. People started leaving the venue when the interaction was just midway. Most of the early speakers were party’s office-bearers. This prompted Amarinder to make an appeal to women and youngsters to come forward with their suggestions. The grassroots workers, who got a chance to grab the mike, alleged that they were not given their due.
“The party won the last election due to our efforts but then it ignored us completely,” another worker said. One of them suggested that the party should do away with the sending observes to assess prospective candidates’ potential, saying that it promoted internal rivalry.
