14 sarpanches demand removal of liquor vends in Sirsa

SIRSA: Sarpanches of 14 villages of the district, accompanie­d by villagers, met the deputy commission­er on Thursday and handed over a memorandum to him asking for closure of liquor vends in their villages.

Earlier also, as many as 12 panchayats of the district had protested against the opening of liquor vends in their villages.

The villages, whose sarpanches have come out against liquor vends included Rattakhera , Chautala, Gidarkhera, Ramgarh, Darewala, Bharukhera, Aasakhera, Malikpura, Sukerakher­a, Ganga, Tippi ,Tejakhera and Goriwala.

Kaushalya Devi, sarpanch of Goriwala, who is a Matric pass, said, “There are four vends in her village. Two youths of the village died recently due to excessive drinking. To save the young generation, we will do our best to close these vends.”

Anil Kumar of Rattakhera said that women of the village suffer as incidents of eve-teasing have been increasing due to the habit of dr8inking among youths. Almost 40% of villagers are addicted to alcohol and most of them are youngsters.

“We will continue to demand the closure of vends till the government takes the required action,” he said.

Meanwhile, a group of women from Dhotar village of Rania also demanded the closure of liquor shops in their village.

Panch Lakshmi Devi, Dhotar village, said that there was a liquor vend, which is 1km from the village, but some people were trying to shift this vend to the village. If the vend was shifted to the village, people would face a lot of difficulti­es.

Sharandeep Kaur, deputy commission­er, said that the district excise and taxation department has been asked to do the needful as per rules. DETC Pawan Chaudhary said we have forwarded the resolution­s to the excise and taxation commission­er for action. The decision would be taken according to the decision of the higher authoritie­s, he said.
