RESERVATION BILL: SETTING A WRONG PRECEDENT

- ramesh.vinayak@hindustantimes.com

The passing of the Jat Reservation Bill in Haryana has opened doors for all communities to get reservation by violence. The government should have instead got all those involved in the violence arrested. The reservation issue is denting India’s image and becoming a roadblock in its growth.

Surrendering before mob violence is setting a bad example. The community has already done immense damage by paralysing the law and order system in the state in addition to causing humongous loss to human life and property.

Burn public property and get rewarded with reservation is the new message the Khattar government in Haryana is conveying to the nation. Reservation was meant to bridge the gap between various socio-economic groups and to uplift the status of the downtrodden, but unfortunately, it is dangerously dividing society further on the basis of caste and religion. The saner elements of all political parties should get together and find ways to stop this scourge.

Why don’t we put the entire country in the reserved category as the cost of violence for attaining the backward status is too high to bear for a developing economy? How can a community that dismantled the lives of innocent people and shook the nation through their violence can be underprivileged?

ARADHANA SHARMA

Caste-based quota has not only damaged the efficiency of the system but has also caused serious fissures in the social fabric of the nation. The government should also control the ever-increasing population, especially in the downtrodden sections of society.

AK SHARMA, CHANDIGARH

VI If the demand for reservation in various sections moves at this speed, one day we will have to de-reserve everything or face a revolution.

NIRANJAN WALIA, JALANDHAR
