CHANDIGARH: A mentally challenged minor girl was allegedly raped in the government hospital in Yamunanagar, 102 km from here, by a sanitation worker in the wee hours of Wednesday.

Doctors said the girl was brought to the hospital by the local police after she was found in Kansapur area of the city around midnight on Tuesday. Since could not give details about herself or her family, she was admitted to the trauma centre of the hospital.

The heinous crime came to light when a nurse heard the cries of the girl. However, she noticed that the girl was missing in the trauma centre. As the nurse went around to search her, she saw the accused, identified as Vijay, fleeing a room and the girl crying there with her clothes partially removed. Ajay was reportedly hired through an outsourcing company.

The hospital staff said part of the crime was recorded in the CCTV cameras. The footage shows Vijay taking the girl inside the room and later fleeing the spot.

Deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Adarshdeep Singh told HT that the police registered a case under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at women’s police station and investigations were on.

The DSP said the police would scan the CCTV footage to get more details and a team had been sent to the accused’ native village Golni.
