Power woes: Govt wakes up after villagers seal school in Jind district
ROHTAK: Authorities on Wednesday swung into action after villagers forcibly sealed two government schools in Haryana over shortage of resources in the past two days.
Government schools in Amarheri village in Jind and Sanpera village in Sonepat were sealed by angry villagers due to non-availability of electricity and shortage of teaching staff, respectively.
In Amarheri village, the government school with a strength of over 400 students remained shut for two days as villagers refused to send their children to school in scorching heat without electricity supply. Sources said the school had not paid power bills for the past two years and had an outstanding amount of `1.62 lakh, leading to disconnection of power supply.
Jind district education officer (DEO) Vandana Gupta said, “The government has requested to pay the bill in four installments and the department has agreed to resume connection from Thursday.”
In Sanpera, villagers had complained that there was no staff to teach students. However, Sonepat DEO Zila Singh Sharma said the school had recently upgraded to senior secendory and blamed “mischievous elements” for sealing the school. “15 teaching posts for the school have been sanctioned by the government. It would have been accurate for those mischievous elements to discuss the matter with me before sealing school.”
