19-year-old injured in acid attack in Bhiwani village
ROHTAK: A 19-year-old girl suffered critical burn injuries after an unidentified person threw acid on her while she was sleeping at her home in Denod village of Bhiwani district in the wee hours of Friday.
The incident comes barely three days after six members of a family, including three women, were attacked with acid in Haryana’s Jind district over a family-related feud with their neighbour-cum-extended family members.
Despite a ban on sale of acid, imposed by the Supreme Court, the cases of such attacks have been rampant in Haryana, with more than 45 cases reported in the past four years, according to the Acid Survivors Foundation India.
The police said the victim was sleeping in her room when someone removed her quilt and poured acid on her face. She tried to catch the victim and got hold of the person, however, he managed to break free and run away.
Her family members rushed to her when she cried in pain, but said the accused had fled the spot by then. The victim was rushed to Chaudhary Bansi Lal hospital in Bhiwani, where her condition is said to be stable.
The police said the victim suffered burn injuries on her face and hands.

The victim’s mother said they could not tell what could be the motive behind the act.
“It seems to be some kind of harmful chemical. We will know more after confirmation from the laboratory. There is no clue of the accused as of now. The victim and her family have not raised suspicion on anyone in their statements given to us,” Bhiwani Sadar police station incharge said.
The police said they have registered a case against unknown persons under Section 326A (punishment for throwing acid) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and were trying to find a motive behind the incident.
The sarpanch of the village, Rajpal Singh, however, raised suspicion that the act could have been done by a family member.
