Writer Paul Beatty with Meru Gokhale on Thursday. Beatty won the Man Booker Prize in 2016 for his book, The Sellout. Beatty’s conversation revealed the author’s voice is a much mellower version of his protagonist in The Sellout — wry, fast talking and given to making the occasional outrageous comment. On being asked what he thought of Donald Trump’s inauguration as President, he said, “You know those d**k pics on the Internet? Well, this is like America’s d**k pic,” he said as the audience cracked up.
