ALIGARH:For 19-year-old city boy, Rinku Singh, life changed dramatically this Monday. He became the first cricketer from the city to make it to the Indian Premier League

“Batting legend Virender Sehwag paid Rs 10 lakh to take Rinku in the Kings XI Punjab team during the auction ceremony on Monday,” said Masud-uz-Zafar Amini, one of Rinku’s coaches.

Thrilled with the news, local cricketers and Rinku’s coaches and kin thronged the sports stadium on Tuesday. Also present, to congratulate the new star in their midst, were sports officer in-charge, Manzur Alam Ansari, assistant sports officer, Ashwani Kumar and others. Later, prominent city builder, Arjun Singh Faqira, organised a ceremony to honour Rinku and his parents.

Speaking to HT, the cricketer said that he was delighted at his selection. “It is dream come true. I am now hoping that I soon get to sport the blue jersey of the Indian national cricket team,” he said. Rinku hails from an extremely humble background. His father, Khanchand, is an LPG delivery man employed with the Govila gas agency here.

The family, including his mother Veena, five brothers and a sister, resides in a tin shed on the gas agency premises. One of his brothers is an auto-rickshaw driver and another is employed as a fourth grade employee at a coaching centre.
