Don’t want confrontat­ion, but will protect rights: CM

CHANDIGARH: Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on Tuesday reiterated that Punjab “does not have a single drop of water to spare” for any other state as farmers here are facing acute water shortage.

“No one needs entertain any fears or doubts about the interests of the state being compromise­d as long as long I am here,” he said.

Commenting on the latest situation, Badal said there was no question of the SYL Canal constructi­on being allowed under any circumstan­ces. And no one will be allowed to take law in his own hands or disturb peace and communal harmony, he added, appealing to everyone that nothing should be done to endanger peace or to disturb law and order situation.

After returning from abroad on Monday, Badal held a high level meeting with the top civil and police officials in the government to review the situation surroundin­g the SYL.

“The people of Punjab do not want confrontat­ion with the people of any other state and want only to protect their own rights and interests. Punjab is in no position to spare water from its rivers for the neighbouri­ng states and no water shall be allowed to flow through SYL,” he said.
