Remark row: Rakhi cites leg injury for missing court hearing

JALANDHAR: A day after a Ludhiana court issued fresh non-bailable warrants against controvers­ial actress Rakhi Sawant on Friday in a case of hurting religious sentiments, she held a press conference in a city hotel on Saturday late night. When asked about her non-appearance in a Ludhiana court at the last date of hearing on July 7, Sawant said she had hurt her leg.

“I had hurt my leg in Mumbai, so I could not appear in court,” she said, adding that her medical certificat­e had been submitted in court.

She claimed that she had requested the Punjab Police to provide security during her visit to the court, but received no response. “Punjab police are known for their strength can’t even assure a security of a woman on the court or in the wrestling academy,” she claimed, adding that she had to shelve her plan for a visit to the Khali Wrestling Academy in Hazaar village on Saturday, as ‘certain groups had planned to gherao her’ in the village.

At the press conference, Rakhi again apologised to the Valmiki community for her alleged objectiona­ble remarks against sage Valmiki. The complaint is a Ludhiana lawyer Narinder Aadia. The next date of court hearing is August 7. Wrestler Daleep Singh, alias Khali, who also appeared along side her. She said she was determined to learn wrestling from Khali for self-defence.

“Though I could not visit Khali’s academy for security reasons. I will be back to learn wrestling,” she said.
