Congress women wing protests GST on langar items

AMRITSAR: The Congress women wing workers staged a protest at the Hall Gate, against the imposition of Goods and Service Tax (GST) on langar items in religious places, on Sunday .

The workers, led by the Punjab Mahila Congress president Mamata Dutta shouted slogans against Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi led central government and Union finance minister Arun Jatley.

While addressing the protesters, Dutta said, “Lakhs of devotees eat langar at Sri Harimandar Sahib (Golden Temple) and other religious places.

“However, the Centre has burdened them by imposing GST. It is unfortunat­e,” she said.One of the women protesters said that every political party should oppose GST.

They warned that the stir will continue in coming days if the decision is not withdrawn.

Meanwhile the stir by textile traders is still on since the GST was imposed.

The city based textile traders and industrial­ists have been protesting the imposition of GST on textiles. CHANDIGARH: Punjab power Minister Rana Gurjeet Singh on Sunday said he has plans to convert farmers in the state from “power consumers to power producer”.

Tubewell motors of farmers will be replaced with a “five-star” motor that will run on solar power as per the plan, he said.

The minister announced this in a meeting with engineers and officials of the PSPCL and Punjab State Transmissi­on Corporatio­n Limited (PSTCL) here.“Farmers will not only use solar power to run their tubewell but they will also sell this power during the idle period,” Singh said.The minister has asked the PSPCL and the PSTCL to study the feasibilit­y of this project.“This project will not only provide an additional source of income to every son of soil. But the state government will also save Rs 7,000 crore that it used to pay on power subsidy,” he said. HTC
