JALANDHAR: Listing cyber crime as the new challenge before security forces, Punjab governor VP Singh Badnore on Monday expressed hope that the state police will fight it effectively.

Addressing the gathering during passing-out parade and investiture ceremony at Punjab Police Academy in Phillaur near here, the governor said, “Though cyber crime is a new domain for the state police... I am hopeful that they would meet this challenge efficiently. To meet this challenge, the cyber crime centre must be upgraded along with ensuring professional training to the forces on scientific lines.”

Badnore said the role of police in today’s social scenario requires skills “not only to maintain law and order but also to deal with problems arising out of rapid socioeconomic, socio-political and socio-cultural changes apart from technological development”. Striking an emotional chord with the families of police officers awarded medals posthumously for their gallantry, he said that this honour was just an expression of gratitude towards the families of the bravehearts.

He said the country would ever remain indebted to “these heroes for their supreme sacrifice for unity and integrity of India”.

Accompanied by director general of police Suresh Arora, he also took the salute from a parade led by probationary deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Gursher Singh Sandhu.

Later, DGP (human resource development) S Chatopadhyaya
