This Diwali was very special for Delhiites for many reasons, primarily for the Supreme Court ruling banning the sale of crackers. As a result, we had, relatively, a calmer and less polluted Diwali, with lots of light, delight and merriment.

Apart from Diwali greetings from relatives and friends, I received this time, like millions of others, a “very warm and prosperous Diwali” greeting from the Prime Minister’s Office.

Among others, the messages that flooded my mind space had an urgent reminder that we are here to remind ourselves about our role to play positive acts and not to allow war-mongers to play their ‘disruptive games’. We are here to spread the message of love, peace, amity and prosperity by working together in unity.

Diwali’s festivities of light and sweets carry the message that the world is one, humanity is one and that we have to work single-mindedly for each other’s peace and prosperity. Nothing works better and brighter than work done in groups and with solidarity.

As a friend says, we should light up the lamps within us and show a direction that leads nowhere but to a path of peace and progress for all. What we need urgently is to understand each other and have the will to live together and work together for the overall good of mankind. If we don’t do it ourselves, who will?
