BAI announces award for Srikanth

NEWDELHI: The Badminton Associatio­n of India (BAI) on Monday announced a cash award of ~ 5 lakh for Kidambi Srikanth, who won the singles title at the Denmark Open Superserie­s Premier in Odense on Sunday.

Srikanth defeated Lee Hyun II of South Korea 21-10, 21-5 to clinch his maiden Danish title and continued his phenomenal run in 2017 to become the only player other than Lin Dan to achieve the feat of winning three Superserie­s titles in a calendar year.

Before this, he had won the Indonesia Open and the Australia Open. Srikanth will look to carry on his fine form into the French Open this week

PUNERI PALTAN ELIMINATE UP YODDHA

MUMBAI: Puneri Paltan held their nerve to dump UP Yoddha out of Pro Kabaddi League Season 5 here on Monday after a keenly fought 40-38 victory.

Puneri Paltan are now through to Eliminator 3.

Girish Ernak was rock solid at the back and scored seven tackle points while Deepak Niwas Hooda scored 10 raid points to lead their team to victory.

UP Yoddha squandered a solid start and despite Rishank Devadiga’s 15 point effort their campaign came to an end.

UP Yoddha were let down by their defence as they could score just eight tackle points whereas Pune defence scored 17 tackle points.

INDIA JUNIORS BEAT MALAYSIA 2-1

JOHOR BAHRU (MALAYSIA): Dilpreet Singh scored a brace as India’s junior hockey team defeated hosts Malaysia 2-1 to register their second consecutiv­e win at the seventh Sultan of Johor Cup.

Malaysia scored early through Firdaus Omar (3rd minute) but India’s Dilpreet Singh (20th, 43rd) found the goal twice to enable India take full points from the encounter.
