Four killed, 4 hurt in bus-truck collision due to smog in Ferozepur

FEROZEPUR/NABHA : Four people were killed and 15 injured in two road accidents caused due to poor visibility in the state on Tuesday.

In the first accident, four people were killed and as many injured when the state-run bus they were travelling in collided with a truck coming from the opposite direction in Ferozepur district on Tuesday morning, police said.

The Punjab roadways bus was on its way to Fazilka from Ferozepur when it collided with a truck near Lakho Ke Behram village, 18km from Ferozepur, on the Ferozepur-Fazilka road.

Eyewitness­es said the accident took place when the bus driver was trying to overtake a vehicle.

The deceased are: Sudhir Grover, a music teacher at a government school, bus driver Paramjit Singh, Arjun Singh a private schoolteac­her— all from Ferozepur — and Buta Singh, the truck driver, who was a native of Sunam in Sangrur district.

Those injured were Harpal Singh, Rakesh Kumar and Amrit Pal. While Harpal and Rakesh have been referred to Faridkot medical college, Armit was taken to a local hospital.

Ferozepur deputy commission­er Ramvir said the injured were provided medical assistance from the local Red Cross unit.

Chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh has announced an ex gratia of ₹1 lakh for those who were killed in the accident. He also directed the district authoritie­s to provide free medical treatment to the injured, a spokespers­on said in Chandigarh.

11 INJURED IN NABHA

Meanwhile, in the second accident, 11 people were injured after their bus collided with a stationary truck on the Nabha - Bhawanigar­h Road, near Majhi village, 12 km from Nabha.

The accident took place at around 11:45 am.

Passengers said their was dense fog and claimed that the truck was wrongly parked in the middle of the road. This, they said, caused the accident.

The injured were brought to Nabha civil hospital for treatment. Most of them have sustained injuries on their head and face. Doctors said about four of them are critical injuries.

Naresh Kumar, a passenger on board the bus, said he was standing behind the driver’s seat and the truck could not be seen metres away from the bus.

Station house officer of Bhawanigar­h, Charanjeev Singh, said an officer has been appointed to investigat­e the matter. “We are recording the statements of the victims to take further action,” he said.
