ROHTAK : The Jind police have arrested a woman from Punjab who tried to extort Rs 25 lakh from a Narwana village youth by lodging a false rape case against him. The police said Patiala-based woman Deepika contacted Sanjeev Kumar of Jind via internet.

In November last year, she called him to Kaithal on the pretext of attending a wedding, where she had physical relations with him. However, soon after she filed a rape case against him at Pehowa police station.

The police said Sanjeev was arrested and had been lodged in jail for the past two months.

Sanjeev’s younger brother Anil said, “We had been getting calls from a mediator identified as Virender, who said if we give Deepika Rs 25 lakh, she will take the case back. We discussed it with Jind SP and chalked out a plan to catch them red handed by offering them the first installment of Rs 2 lakh.”

DSP Joginder Singh said they formed a team that carried out a raid when Sanjeev’s family handed over Rs 2 lakh to Virender, and caught him redhanded.

“Virender confessed that he was asked by Deepika to demand money from Sanjeev’s family. Deepika along with her paramour Jaskaran Deep of Punjab’s Moga had been running a honeytrap racket,” the DSP said.

The police have arrested Deepika, Jaskaran and Virender.
