SANGRUR : High drama was witnessed on Monday when AAP Sunam MLA Aman Arora alleged that sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) deliberately skipped the meeting to elect president of president and vice-president of the Cheema nagar panchayat.

However, the AAP MLA and his supporters elected Avtar Singh Taari as president and Balwinder Kaur as vice-president. They also wrote to election commission and the deputy commissioner saying that the SDM did not attend the January 12 meeting too.

Ironically, after his appointment, Avtar Singh attended a meeting called by local Congress leader Daman Thind Bajwa, who contested the assembly polls from Sunam, at her residence. Daman claimed that all the 13 members of the nagar panchayat are Congress supporters. “I am a committed Congressman. I will work for the party,” Avtar Singh told HT. However, AAP said the ruling Congress was exerting pressure on administration.
