KARGIL SHIVERS AT -20°C
Kargil continued with its stretch of lowest temperatures in the entire state and recorded a minimum of -20°C on Monday, officials said. A MeT official said Kargil recorded the lowest temperature in the region, even lower than Leh, which recorded a minimum of -10.9 °C. “Kargil and Drass have been recording low temperatures for a few days now. On January 9, Kargil recorded a minimum of -23°C, while on January 10, it recorded -23.6°C. Such low temperatures while continue in the region for the next five days,” a senior MeT official said. He further explained this has happened because there has been no rainfall or snowfall in the area, which would have pulled the temperatures up. Night temperatures throughout the Kashmir valley remained several degrees below the freezing point on Monday — Srinagar recorded a minimum of -3.3°C while Gulmarg shivered at -6.4°C. The weather is expected to be dry during the next four to five days and as such the night temperatures could fall further in the Valley and Ladakh region.
