‘Avoid gender-based recruitment in police’

-

AMRITSAR : Noted social crusader Bibi Inderjit Kaur, chairperson of the All India Pingalwara Charitable Society, running a home for the destitute here, on Friday, said corruption was rampant in the police department and one of the reasons is that the police are not provided necessary funds for different social tasks they are assigned to perform.

Kaur was speaking at the zonal (border) level conference on the ‘Role of women in police and attitudinal shift’ held at Sri Ram Ashram School here.

She said, “Police are supposed to cremate unidentified bodies. However, they don’t have the necessary funds for the same. In such a situation, police sometimes seek our help to accomplishment their assignments. There are many such tasks they have to do but they don’t have funds. This is also one of the root causes of corruption in the department. The government must allocate funds for such tasks too it it wants to curb corruption in the police ,” she added. VK Bhawra, director general of police (provisioning and modernisation), attended the conference as chief guest.

Hundreds of women cops, besides others, attended the conference, which witnessed panel discussions and question-answer sessions on various issues concerning women cops.

The prominent personalities who attended the conference included Sanjeev Kalra, additional director general of police (welfare), RPS Brar, ADGP (PSPCL/PTL), Gurpreet Kaur Deo, inspector general (provisioning), V Nirja, inspector general (personnel), Surinderpal Singh Parmar, inspector general (border range), RK Mittal, director general of Police (border range) and Amritsar Police commissioner SS Srivastava and SSP (Amritsar-rural) Parampal Singh. Besides redressing grievances of women cops while on duty, the police officers also motivated them so that they can compete in the male-dominated society.
