GURUGRAM: Dreaded gangster Rajesh Bharti, who was killed along with three of his aides in a police encounter in Delhi on Saturday, had been active in Gurugram for the last one year. Bharti had taken the charge of Sandeep Gadoli gang after the latter was killed in an encounter with the Gurugram police in Mumbai, police said.

Senior officers in the Gurugram police said Bharti was on good terms with Gadoli’s siblings and offered to run the gang until Gadoli’s brother, lodged in the Bhondsi jail, was released, said police sources.

Bharti had formed the ‘Kranti’ gang last year after he met Sanjeet who had fled from Hisar borstal on June 12 along with five more juveniles.

Sanjeet was apprehended for murdering Manish Gujjar alias Pappu, brother of Binder Gujjar, another notorious gangster, on October 18, 2016.

“The gang wanted to become known by spreading rumours like they were planning to murder JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar. Bharti had also been using social media platforms to earn notoriety. They wanted to be known across states so they could operate from multiple locations,” DCP (crime) Sumit Kuhar said.

Saturday’s encounter in Delhi is the fallout of a race for supremacy in Gurugram’s crime world, which used to be dominated by several dons who are already dead, police officers privy to the activities of these gangs said.

The Kranti gang members were wanted in multiple cases of murder, extortion, and abduction and had connections to other interstate gangs. They used to help each other in the game of one-upmanship with their rivals.

The gang was mainly based out of Haryana but had been off late active in Gurugram’s industrial area.

“They were targeting people who were already involved in illegal trades like betting and supplying drugs and illegal liquor to other states. Most of the victims did not complain to police and paid them the extortion money,” Kuhar said.

Gadoli village and Kakrola village were some of the Kranti gang’s hideouts in Haryana.
