- Mir Ehsan letterschd@hindustantimes.com

policemen guarding the house of advocate general (AG) foiled the militants’ bid of looting weapons as they had concealed four weapons minutes before the militants entered the native house of AG, Jahangir Gania in South Kashmir’s Mattan area last week.

As per sources, the police had received a tip off about militants planning to carry out any ‘action in Anantnag town or its adjoining areas.

A senior police officer privy to investigations said, “I think police got a sense of things and they just manage to hide their weapons at a safe place minutes before militants arrived at the house of AG. By the time police escorts reached the house militants had left the place.”

This is perhaps first time in the past three years when policemen managed to save their weapons without putting up a fight or a scuffle with the militants in south Kashmir.

On Thursday night militants barged into advocate general’s house with an intention to loot weapons of policemen guarding the family. The militants, however, could not trace the weapons and left after ransacking the guardroom and even thrashed the policemen. At the time of incident, the AG was in Srinagar at his official residence.

The militants first ransacked the guardroom while searching for the weapons of four policemen. They, however, couldn’t locate them. Later they also searched the rooms of the house of AG; where his family is staying, but could not locate the weapons there as well.

Meanwhile, two youths from Shopian were arrested by the police at Thana Mandi (Rajouri), the youths had stolen a weapon of police guard at Shahdara shrine police post. Police said the youths in mid 20’s are the residents of Shopian and where fleeing towards Shopian when they were intercepted by a police naka.

Since the unilateral ceasefire was announced, militants have made several attempts to snatch the weapons from the cops posted at different places of the Valley. However, the guards foiled most of their attempts.

SEARCH OPS LAUNCHED IN BANDIPORE

There was a brief exchange of fire between militants and security forces in the forests of north Kashmir’s Bandipore on Monday even as a massive search operation continued to look for the militants who had attacked an army patrol three days ago.

The area has been cordoned off from all sides and all routes have been sealed for the past three days. “It’s second time when we heard exchange of firing in the forest area,” said a villager on phone who lives close to the area where the search operation is underway.

Locals said a search operation by the soldiers of Rashtriya Rifles and the Special Operation Group of J&K police is going on in the forests of Panaar and Raynaar.
