NABHA/CHANDIGARH : Nearly 1,300 kg paneer, 1,600 litre milk and skimmed milk powder suspected to be spurious were seized from two dairies in Nabha subdivision of Patiala district in late night raids on Tuesday.

The raids, which continued till Wednesday morning, were carried out by a joint team of the health department, food safety department, dairy development department and police. The team was also assisted by the members of the Progressive Dairy Farmers Association.

In a raid at the Deep Purity Milk Production Centre at Khokh village, 1,200 kg spurious paneer, 800 litre milk, 130 kg cream and a box of caustic soda were seized, officials said. The team destroyed the milk on the spot. District health officer Dr Krishan Singh said the milk smelled foul and they found it unfit for consumption.

In another raid at the Basant Milk Collection Centre at Sangatpura village, spurious and substandard 80 kg paneer, 800 litre milk, 25 kg skimmed milk powder were seized.

Samples of all these items will be sent to the state food testing laboratory in Kharar on Thursday. However, none of the dairies was sealed. No arrest was made either. Both the dairies are being run in residential areas.

Hardeep Singh, owner of the Deep Purity Milk Production Centre, denied the suggestion that the milk was adulterated. “We believe in ethical trade and officials are always welcome for sampling,” he said.
