AMRITSAR: Three unidentified people robbed an ex-serviceman of his car after firing a gunshot at him near Chheharta, 7km from Amritsar, on Wednesday.
Police said Dilbagh Singh, a dealer of second-hand cars in Chheharta, had put up an advertisement on online marketplace OLX to sell off his Maruti Suzuki Swift VDi car.
Chheharta station house officer (SHO) Harish Behal said: “Dilbagh got a call from an unidentified man, who had seen the on-sale car’s advertisement on OLX, and the deal was struck for Diwali day.”
The unidentified man, along with his two aides, reached Chheharta and asked Dilbagh for a test drive.
While two of the accused sat in the car with Dilbagh, the third followed them on a motorcycle. “After driving the car for around 5km, one of the accused took out a pistol and fired a shot in Dilbagh’s leg,” said the SHO.
They then pushed injured Dilbagh out of the car and fled, he added. Some passersby called the police and Dilbagh was rushed to a private hospital.
A case under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 179 B (theft by force) of the Indian Penal Code and 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act will be registered against the unidentified accused after recording Dilbagh’s statement, the SHO said.
He said hunt has been launched to identify and nab the accused.
