Former sarpanch, aide held with 444 liquor bottles, pistol

: A former sarpanch of Jeeda village who owes allegiance to Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and his accomplice were arrested for smuggling liquor from Haryana. The police recovered 444 bottles (37 cartons) of smuggled countrymad­e liquor, a pistol and eight cartridges from their possession.

Accused Jagsir Singh of Jeeda village and Dhanraj of Tungwali village were arrested near Gehri Butar village on Bathinda-Dabwali road on Tuesday. Accused were travelling in a car bearing a fake registrati­on number (PB 61 B 3970) when a police party intercepte­d them.

A case under the Excise Act and Arms Act has been registered against the two at Sangat police station. Accused Jagseer Singh was sarpanch of Jeeda village till panchayats were dissolved in July this year and was also the block president of BKU (Ekta Sidhupur). District president of farmer union Baldev Singh Sandoha said Jagsir was made to resign from the union for contesting the panchayat polls and he joined SAD after that.
