Two Punjab Police ASIs killed in fog-related accident

Police say the truck driver applied brakes suddenly, causing the fatal mishap

Two assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) posted at the Punjab Police Academy, Phillaur, were killed while two of their colleagues were injured on Friday when the car they were travelling in rammed into a truck amid fog at Handiaya town near the district headquarte­rs in Barnala. The accident took place around 6:30am. The four cops belong to different parts of Muktsar and were going to Patiala where they were assigned duties.

BARNALA : Two assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) posted at the Punjab Police Academy, Phillaur, were killed while two of their colleagues were injured on Friday when the car they were travelling in rammed into a truck amid fog at Handiaya town near the district headquarte­rs in Barnala.

The accident took place around 6:30am, police said. The four cops belong to different parts of Muktsar district and were going to Patiala where they were assigned law and order duties, police added.

Police said ASIs Malkit Singh and Gurmeet Singh, both in their mid fifties, died on the spot soon after their Maruti Ritz car (PB19F 0678) hit the truck (RJ GA 3363).

ASIs Sadhu Singh (53) and Rachhpal Singh (54), who sustained serious injuries, were rushed to a hospital in Bathinda from where Rachhpal was referred to the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), Ludhiana.

Barnala station house officer (SHO, city 2) Manjit Singh said, “The truck driver suddenly applied brakes, leading to the accident and causing the deaths. We have arrested the truck driver, Kishan Meeka, of Rajasthan and have registered a case against him under Sections 304-A (causing death by negligence) and 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the local police station.”
