FOUR SAHIBZADAS MARTYRED THIS MONTH, CHANGE DATE: TAKHT, SGPC

-

AMRITSAR : The Akal Takht and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) have asked the government as well as the Election Commission of India (ECI) to postpone the panchayat election date.

Akal Takht jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh said Sikhs are not pleased with the panchayat poll date (December 30) as martyrdom days of Sahibzadas (sons of Guru Gobind Singh) and Mata Gujri, mother of the Guru, fall in this month.

He said the Sikhs observe the martyrdom as “shaheedi saptah” in the second half of December and they don’t take part in celebrations during these days. He said the SGPC has already written to the state government to extend the date.

“If the date is not changed, we will see what should be the next course of action,” he said.

Meanwhile, SGPC president Gobind Singh Longowal reiterated the demand stating that the polling date doesn’t go well with the Sikh community.
