Militants kill 4 cops in Valley, take away their weapons

Four policemen were shot dead in Shopian district and their service rifles taken away by militants belonging to Jaish-e-Mohammad on Tuesday, police said. The incident took place at Zainpora village when militants entered into a guard room where the four policemen were present, a police official said.

Four policemen, guarding a minority pocket in Shopian district, were shot dead and their service rifles taken away by militants belonging to Jaish-e-Mohammad on Tuesday, police said.

The slain policemen were identified as Abdul Majeed Ganaie, Mehraj-ud-din Dar, Anees Ahmad Mir and Hameed-ul-lah Ganaie.

Police spokesman said, “The militants fired indiscrimi­nately on a guard post at Zainapora in which four cops sustained injuries. Three cops died on the spot while the other who was shifted to the hospital for treatment succumbed to his injuries later.”

Security forces have cordoned off the area to track down the attackers, the official said.

A search operation was launched in the area to track the attackers.

Jaish-e- Mohammad militant group claimed the responsibi­lity for the attack and even circulated pictures of the weapons on social media which they claimed to have snatched from the cops.

Earlier in August, four policemen, who were members of an escort party of deputy superinten­dent of police, were killed in Bongam in Shopian when militants fired on them from an orchard.

The militants also took away the rifles of policemen.

In September, three policemen, including two special officers, were killed few hours after abduction from Kaparan village.

This year, 43 policemen have been killed by militants in different parts of Kashmir, with majority deaths of in south Kashmir’s four districts.

Shopian is considered as the hotbed of militancy with youths actively joining militant ranks in the past two year.

PDP, NC CONDEMN ATTACK

Former J&K chief minister and People’s Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti condemned the attack on the police post. “Strongly condemn attack on policemen in Shopian claiming precious lives. Bears repetition, violence achieves nothing but destructio­n. Solidarity with families of jawans,’’ the president tweeted.

National Conference vicepresid­ent Omar Abdullah also condemned the attack.
