Manika is table tennis’ Breakthrough Star
NEW DELHI: Table tennis player Manika Batra became the first Indian to get the ‘Breakthrough Table Tennis Star’ award at the ITTF Star Awards, in Incheon on Wednesday. “I am honoured and happy to have received the award. I feel, 2018 has been the best year of my career so far and I am happy for what I have achieved,” Manika said at the ceremony.
Manika started the year on a high at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, guiding India to its firstgold in women’s team category. She also bagged gold in the singles category, defeating former World No 4 Feng Tianwei.
The 23-year-old Arjuna awardee then partnered Sharath Kamal to clinch bronze in the mixed doubles category of the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.
FORTUNEGIANTS WIN
K Prapanjan and Parvesh Bhainswal shone bright to help Gujarat Fortunegiants continue their fine form, registering a comfortable 47-37 win against Haryana Steelers in a Pro Kabaddi Season 6 fixture here on Wednesday. The raiding duo of Prapanjan and Sachin led the charge for Gujarat and both achieved a super 10 each to score 22 points. Parvesh Bhainswal and Sunil Kumar led the defence for Gujarat and contained Haryana raiders throughout the match at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium.
ATHLETICS FOR BLIND
The four-day long Usha National Athletics Championships for the Blind commenced here with more than 500 participants, including 150 women, participating in the event. Ranjana Devi won the women’s javelin event (B1) with a throw of 10.59m. Tamphasana Devi (Manipur) won the women’s B2 javelin event (13.21m). Other results: (Men) Long Jump B1: Parmar Jagdish (Gujarat) 4.72; Javelin B1: Majirana Bharat (Gujarat) 31.89.
POLICE ATHLETICS
NEWDELHI:Angrez Singh of Punjab Police clinched the 110m hurdles gold, clocking 14.81 sec, in the 67th All India Police Athletics Championship being organised by CISF at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Amrut Tivale of Maharashtra Police won silver, timing 14.92. The 4x100m women’s relay gold was won by SSB with its runners, Bhateri, Anurupa Kumar, Ranga K and Jilna MV, timing 46.41 sec, followed by CRPF runners who clocked 46.73.
