Gangster Cheema, 2 others arrested with 270gm heroin

LUDHIANA: The anti-narcotic wing of the Ludhiana Police have arrested wanted gangster, Manu Cheema, and his two accomplice­s with 270gm heroin on them from Jaspal Bangar village, around 12km from the district headquarte­rs, on Thursday.

The police added that sharpedged weapons, six cartridges and a motorcycle have also been recovered from their possession. Cheema had been declared a proclaimed offender in a case registered against him in July 2015.

The other two arrested are Jaggi, of Kot Mangal Singh of Shimlapuri, and Sarabjit Singh, alias Sajan, of Azad Nagar of New Shimlapuri of Ludhiana. The accused have been booked under sections 22/61/85 of the NDPS Act at the Sahnewal police station. Cheema, of Jogi Cheema village, Gurdaspur, is wanted by the district police there in several criminal cases, including the murder case of the sister of one of his friends.

PLANNED TO ROB PNB BRANCH: POLICE

Police commission­er Sukhchain Singh Gill said, “The accused were planning to rob the Punjab National Bank (PNB) branch near Samrala Chowk over the next three-four days. Cheema had links with gangster Gurpreet Baba and together they had robbed a PNB branch in Pathankot in June 2018. They had also robbed a filling station in Pathankot.”

He added that the accused had started drug peddling to buy weapons and were also inolved in snatchings in the city. “The accused had rented out a house in Jamalpur. We will act against the owner for not conducting police verificati­on. The motorcycle recovered belongs to Sarabjit Singh, alias Sajan,” the commission­er added.

“Cheema is a proclaimed offender in a bank dacoity and a filling station robbery,” he added.

GANG FORMED OVER FACEBOOK

Police claimed that Cheema and his accomplice­s had met over Facebook. A gangster, Honey, of the Vicky Gounder gang, settled in Saudi Arabia, had acted as their common reference and helped them form the gang. “The accused have also been using social networking sites to misguide youngsters into joining the gang,” the commission­er added.
