Inter-state drug racket busted, 3.5 quintal poppy husk seized

JALANDHAR: The counter intelligen­ce wing of Punjab Police on Thursday busted an inter-state drug smuggling racket after arresting three smugglers with 3.5 quintals of poppy husk hidden under onion bags in a truck near Phillaur here.

Those arrested have been identified as Nishan Singh, 40, of Dhuri in Sangrur and Raghbir Singh, 40, and Hardeep Singh, 47, of Moga. The fourth accomplice and the kingpin, Jaswinder Singh alias Kaka Gill of Moga, managed to flee from the spot.

Counter intelligen­ce additional inspector general (AIG) HPS Khakh said acting on a tipoff that a drug consignmen­t was being supplied in a truck with registrati­on number PB29-AZ7767 from Madhya Pradesh by Moga-based drug kingpin Jaswinder Singh, they set up special checking points in Phillaur town.

Singh was involved in smuggling poppy husk from Madhya Pradesh.

Khakh said the police stopped a truck coming from SBS Nagar with three persons, along with the driver. When the police party stopped the truck for checking, one person fled from the spot and the remaining three persons were apprehende­d.

“During checking of the truck, the police seized 3.5 quintal of poppy husk hidden under 480 loaded bags of onions and a case was registered at Phillaur police station under Sections 15/61/85 of the NDPS Act,” the AIG said.

Khakh said the accused will be taken on police remand to interrogat­e about the module of the racket and other persons involved in this network.
