SUSPENDED COP HELD FOR ATTEMPTING TO LOOT ATM

SHIMLA : Two days after a suspended police constable made an unsuccessf­ul attempt to loot an automated teller machine (ATM) of the Punjab National Bank in Lakkar Bazar, he was arrested on Thursday.

The accused, Ajay Kumar, on December 11 had attempted to vandalise an ATM at Lakkar Bazar, 100 metres from the Lakkar Bazar police station.

He, however, was unsuccessf­ul and video of the whole incident was recorded in CCTV cameras installed in the ATM, following which cops ascertaine­d his identity.

Deputy superinten­dent of police Pramod Shukla said, “The accused was suspended from the duty on December 5 as he was transferre­d to Kotkhai from Kaithu, but he didn’t report on duty.”

Shukla said the police conducted raids and arrested the accused from Sanjhauli on Thursday. During interrogat­ion, the accused told police that he was unaware of the theft and was under the influence of intoxicant­s on the night of the incident.A case was registered against Kumar under Sections 457 (trespass in order to commit offence), 380 (theft in any building), 511 (punishment for attempting to commit offence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Sadar police station.
