A soldier guarding an artillery camp opened fire near the Line of Control (LoC) after noticing suspicious movement near an army installation in north Kashmir’s Uri area.

Officials said a sentry of Army Artillery unit at Rajarwani camp in the border town fired in speculation. There was no counter firing or attack from the other side, said Baramulla senior superintendent of police Imtiaz Hussain.

“It was just a speculative fire by the sentry seeing suspicious movement. No confirmation of any militant as of now,” he said.

“The area was cordoned and searched jointly by the Quick Reaction Teams (QRT) of army and police outside the camp to ascertain militants’ presence. Two people who had been spotted at a nearby Nallah are being checked out,” he said.

During the search operation, the traffic between Uri and Baramulla was also suspended, which was later resumed.

The operation was called off as nothing was traced while the antecedents are being checked out.

The area is tightly guarded with three tier securities at place following two fidayeen attacks in Mohura and Uri in 2014 and 2016, which left dozens of soldiers dead.
