Transport officials of 4 dists under scanner for fake vehicle registration
PATIALA : Officials of the sub-divisional branches of the state transport department in Moga, Fatehgarh Sahib, Sangrur and Tarn Taran districts are under the scanner of police for alleged forgery of documents in a nexus with gangs of fraudsters who get new registration numbers of vehicles brought from somewhere else and sell them in Punjab.
This came to the fore after the Patiala police busted a gang that used to steal or buy cars from other states without no-objection certificates (NOCs) and sell them in local car markets.
The police said following the arrest of Gurjeet Singh of Dugal village near Khadur Sahib, who worked as an employee for the gang kingpin, they sought records of vehicles from the transport department offices at Moga, Amloh (Fatehgarh Sahib), Tarn Taran, Patti (Tarn Taran), Khadur Sahib (Tarn Taran) and Sangrur.
A case was registered under Sections 4420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 379 (punishment for theft), 465 (punishment for forgery), 467 (forgery of valuable security, will etc), 468 (forgery for cheating) 471 (using as genuine a forged document), 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant, a banker, merchant or agent), and 120-B (punishment of criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code against six persons by name and other unidentified persons. Those booked by name are Kuldeep Singh, his brother Jagdeep Singh, their father Jaswant Singh of Sangrur, Gora and Darshan besides Gurjeet.
Samana crime investigation agency (CIA) in-charge Vijay Kumar said Gurjeet was arrested from Samana while others are on the run. “Kuldeep is kingpin of the gang. He with the help of other suspects opened an office, GGS Car Bazar, in Patran car market and later changed its name to Sarpanch Car Bazar. The gang was active in the region for one-and-ahalf years. The names of senior and low-ranking government officials will be added to the FIR once their involvement is established in the racket,” he said.
