How Gippy was almost stuck in India alone

Singer Gippy Grewal, whose family had almost flown to Canada before the lockdown, is happy that at least he is with them in this time of crisis. “My family and I had come to India much before the lockdown was announced. They had planned to leave for Canada again after a few days. I asked them to stay back for more days, and then the lockdown happened. If they would have left, I would have been stuck here in Chandigarh without them,” shares Grewal, 37, whose routine these days has changed, owing to his kids’ online classes that start at 9pm IST.

“It goes on till three in the morning. This is why we all sleep at 5am. It’s like a holiday feel for us,” says the singer, whose kids study in Canada.

However, his music and philanthropy haven’t taken a back seat. Grewal is set to come up with his next Punjabi single, which the singer recorded and shot on a phone at home. “We actually released two-three [songs] recently. I didn’t have any recording instrument, so I used a mic and a headphone, and shot the entire thing on the phone,” he says.

On the subject of charity, he shares, “There are some associations I am a part of, so every morning, we are busy with the distribution of food.”

While the singer is keeping busy, he also admits that this lockdown has allowed him to reconnect with his family. “When your phone hangs, you need to switch it off and restart, this lockdown has done that for us. Now that I am at home, I also get a chance to go on evening walks with my 13-year-old son, who I now realise has grown up so much and it shows in the way he thinks and talks,” he shares.
