From one mother to another

Covid-19 has impacted the lives of people across all walks of life, but there are some who, despite fighting their own battles, have come to the rescue of those in need. Among these guardian angels are some mothers — sex workers by profession — who are placing collective needs before their own.

A sex worker from the red light area of GB Road, Delhi, says, “My son is five years old and I have no means to earn money. SPID, an NGO, is providing nutritious food and milk for kids. I collect it every morning from their centre and have been informing everyone who needs it. I share my meal with other women in the area who need food for their children, and when my rations get over, they share their food with me.” Rupa Bhaskaran, a former sex worker, is trying to provide ration in Thane, near Mumbai. “I approached Aastha Parivaar, an NGO which has been helping me with funds, and other individuals. I’m providing ration kits to the underprivileged and mothers with kids in the nearby areas,” she says.
