A Mother’s Day like never before

Mom, I’m busy, call you back,” we often say. But do we? Rarely. For those who moved out of home, be it to study, work or after marriage, it’s a familiar story. Earlier, one may have been too busy to notice or may have disregarded Mother’s Day. But the lockdown, say students and young professionals, has made them miss their mothers like nothing else. “I’ve been away from home for eight years, this time it’s tough,” says Pranav Warrier, who works in Gurugram. He plans to visit his mom in Mumbai and “cook without her having to clean the mess in the kitchen!” Memories of ‘Ma ke haath ka khana’ can make even the toughest of the lot emotional. “I don’t go home on Mother’s Day. But the fact that I can’t go this time irks me,” says Aditya Thapa, a student of Ashoka University, Haryana, away from his mom, in Manipur, for five years.

It’s no different for moms. Noida-based teacher Rashmi Bhatnagar’s son is in the US and daughter in Canada. “I miss their presence, more so their hugs and affection. I’ll pray for them to be happy.”
