Guj crosses 8k-mark with 394 new cases

SURAT: The number of Covid-19 cases in Gujarat breached the 8,000-mark on Sunday as the state reported 394 new cases, while the number of fatalities reached 493 with 21 more deaths, a health department official said.

Jayanti Ravi, principal secretary (health) confirmed that the Covid-19 cases reached 8,191 on Sunday. “Of the 394 new cases reported, the highest number of infections were recorded in Ahmedabad (298), followed by Surat (41) and Vadodara (25), among others.”

The state has also reported a sharp jump in the recovery of COVID-19 patients, with 454 patients getting discharged from hospitals between Saturday and Sunday, based on the revised discharge policy.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporatio­n has identified at least 14,000 people who they believe are at high risk of getting infected and can become “supersprea­ders”. In-charge of Ahmedabad, additional chief secretary, Rajiv Kumar Gupta, said: “It was found that there are 2,000 super-spreaders in each zone of the city. It has been decided to examine and screen all of them, with a target of 500 every day in each ward.”

Secretary to chief minister, Ashwani Kumar, said Gujarat leads India in running 46% (the maximum number) of labour trains for migrant workers. “The state has operated 167 trains out of the 364 trains operated across India. Maharashtr­a is at the second spot with 45 trains, followed by Punjab with 36 trains. 25 trains have been operated by Telangana, 24 by Kerala, 20 by Rajasthan, 14 by Karnataka and 11 by Haryana. Looking at the statistics, Gujarat has operated 3 times the total trains operated by Maharashtr­a for migrant workers,” Kumar said.

He added that 42 trains were operated from various parts of Gujarat yesterday. 56 more trains will run today. 18 from Ahmedabad-Sabarmati and Viramgam, 14 from Surat, 3 from Vadodara and Rajkot and the remaining from other cities of Gujarat. These 56 trains will carry 67,200 passengers.
