With 28 fresh infections, J&K tally climbs to 1,317

NUMBERS ADD UP 55-year-old man dies due to Covid in Kashmir, death toll at 17; 38 more patients recover

SRINAGAR/JAMMU: A 55-year-old man died due to Covid-19 at Srinagar’s Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences on Tuesday, taking the death toll in Jammu and Kashmir to 17, officials said.

The deceased was a resident of north Kashmir and died of cardiac arrest. He was suffering from cancer and had tested positive for coronaviru­s, officials said.

Twenty-eight fresh infections were also reported in the UT, taking the total number of cases to 1,317.

Of the new cases, 22 are from the Kashmir division—Anantnag, Kulgam, Baramulla, Ganderbal and Pulwama districts— where the tally has risen to 1,151. Six people have tested positive in Jammu division’s Udhampur, Kathua, Rajouri and Samba districts.

A jump of 11 cases was recorded in Anantnag and seven in Kulgam while there were single digit jumps in rest of the districts in the Valley.

“In Kashmir, 13 people tested positive at the Chest and Disease Hospital out of which three were pregnant women,” said Dr Salim Khan, nodal officer for Covid-19 at GMC, Srinagar.

Also, 38 more patients have recovered and were discharged from various hospitals in J&K. So far, 585 patients in Kashmir and 62 in Jammu division have recovered. Active cases in Kashmir stand at 551 and 102 are in

Jammu division.Two women, in their late 60s, and a 75-year-old man had died in Srinagar on Monday.

Till date, 1.19 lakh people in contact with suspected cases have been put under surveillan­ce—31,524 in home quarantine, 87 in hospital quarantine and 19,555 under home surveillan­ce. Besides these, 67,319 people have completed their 28-day surveillan­ce period.
