THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala on Friday reported 42 new coronavirus disease cases in the highest single day spike since January when the first case of the disease was reported in the state, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan said.

With a large number of expatriates from middle-eastern countries, and migrant workers returning from other states, the number of cases has gone up.

“More people are expected in coming days. We can’t say no to our people. Situation is really critical but there is no need to panic either. What we need is more vigil and surveillance. We will do everything possible to avoid secondary infections,” the chief minister said, adding that more than 90,000 people returned to the state by rail, road and air in last two weeks.
