LA LIGA CAN RESUME FROM JUNE 8, SAYS SPANISH PM

-

MADRID: Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced Saturday that La Liga can resume from its lockdown on the week of June 8. “The resumption of major professional sporting competitions and in particular La Liga will be allowed from the week of June 8,” Sanchez said.

More than two months after the pandemic halted the season in Spain, players have begun training in small groups as they aim to be ready for the planned reboot next month. La Liga president Javier Tebas has said the preferred date for games to resume is Friday, June 12 and Sanchez’s announcement means that plan has been given the government’s green light.

EPL CHIEF ‘CONFIDENT’ OF JUNE RESTART

LONDON: Premier League chief executive Richard Masters is confident the top-flight season will resume in June as ‘Project Restart’ gathers pace.

Clubs returned to socially distanced training in small groups this week and the league hopes to begin playing the remaining 92 matches on June 12 or 19.

Masters said he was “as confident as we can be” that teams would be able to start in June. Asked if the Premier League had an exact date for return, Masters said the organisation had to be “flexible”.

MEXICAN LEAGUE CANCELS SEASON

MEXICO CITY: Mexico’s top flight Liga MX cancelled its Clausura campaign with no title winner in a bid to protect the football community in the country.

Mexico has two championships per year, the Apertura and the Clausura, and the latter was halted by coronavirus in March with 10 of the 17 rounds of matches completed.

At a general meeting Liga MX decided to end the term “to make sure nobody in the football family, players, coaches, directors, referees, fans or media, get hurt”.
