KNOW YOUR MASKS
Experts say N-95 masks with valves — effective when air pollution levels are high — puts those around users in risk during a pandemic
WHAT’S AN N-95 MASK?
These advanced masks can filter up to 95% of the particles in the air and stop respiratory droplets; recommended for frontline staff dealing with Covid-19
N-95 MASKS WITH VALVES They keep the
user from inhaling germs, but the valve — meant to breathe out air — can help release the virus into the atmosphere if the person wearing it is infected. It means anyone in proximity with the user is at risk of contracting the infection
MASKS WITH NO VALVE
The ones without valves also trap most of the germs coming out with exhalation, protecting people around an infected person
Surgical masks:
Recommended for frontline staff not directly dealing with Covid-19; can filter out large particles or liquids in the form of splashes; should be discarded after each use
Homemade cotton face masks/covers:
Recommended for healthy people, those with flu-like symptoms; should be routinely washed
