Top commander among those killed, militants hiding in a residentia­l building had opened fire at the forces

SRINAGAR: Five Hizbul Mujahideen militants, including a top commander of the outfit, were killed in an encounter with security forces in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.

A joint team of police, army and the CRPF launched a search operation in the morning after receiving inputs about presence of militants at Reban village in the south Kashmir district.

The operation turned into a gunfight after militants, who were holed up in a residentia­l building, opened fire at the forces, who retaliated, police said.

Kashmir inspector general of police Vijay Kumar said all five militants were killed in the operation.

Defence spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia said good drills ensured no collateral damage took place during the operation.

As per credible sources, the killed militants belonged to the proscribed Hizbul Mujahideen terror outfit and one among them is believed to be a top commander, police said. The spokespers­on said incase any family claims the killed militants to be their kith or kin, they can come forward for their identifica­tion.

taken into case records for further investigat­ion and to probe their complicity in other terror crimes. On Saturday, unidentifi­ed militants had barged into a house and shot dead a 25-yearold civilian in Adipora Bomai village of Sopore. No group has claimed responsibi­lity for the killing.

Meanwhile, The Indian Army has foiled an infiltrati­on bid along the Line of Control in Naugam sector of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Sunday.

On the night of June 3, a patrol team of the army along the LoC spotted a group of Pakistani terrorists trying to infiltrate into Indian territory, an army spokespers­on said.
