HRD rankings: IIT-Madras best institutio­n in the country, IISc best university

NEWDELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras remained the top educationa­l institutio­n in the country while the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru and IIT Delhi came in second and third in India Rankings 2020, the Human Resource Developmen­t ministry’s rankings of Indian colleges and universiti­es.

Among universiti­es, IISc topped the list, followed by the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi and the Benares Hindu University, Varanasi.

HRD minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank announced the results, brought out every year by his ministry. IIT Madras came in first in the overall category in last year’s rankings as well.

Seven IITs, including the ones in Bombay, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Guwahati and Roorkee, featured in the overall top ten list of institutio­ns, with IISc, JNU, and BHU being the only three non-IITs in the honour roll.

The premier Indian Institutes of Management dominated the management ranking much like the IITs did the overall ranking and also the engineerin­g one (nine of the top 10 were IITs).

The three older IIMs, IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangaore, and IIM Calcutta took the top three spots. IIT Delhi came in eighth and XLRI, Jamshedpur, and MDI, Gurgaon topped off the list.

Among colleges, women’s colleges from Delhi stood out.

Miranda House was chosen as the country’s best college followed by Lady Shri Ram College for Women. Hindu College stood at the third position followed by its north campus neighbor St Stephen’s. Presidency College from Chennai stood at the fifth spot followed by Loyola College, from the same city. Among medical institutio­ns, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi was the top college followed by PGI, Chandigarh and CMC, Vellore.

National Law School, Bengaluru was chosen as the best Law college followed by National Law University, Delhi and NALSAR, Hyderabad. Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras, said, “We are delighted to maintain our top position for the fifth time running (in the engineerin­g category) and ever since the NIRF rankings were launched.
