CHANDIGARH: The Punjab government has decided to increase the ex gratia compensation to families of soldiers killed in action to ₹50 lakh from the existing amount of ₹12 lakh.

The decision was announced by chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh. “Punjab government has decided to increase the ex gratia amount for our soldiers killed in action from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 50 lakh, along with a job to the next of kin. This is the least we can do for our brave servicemen who make the supreme sacrifice for our motherland (sic),” Singh tweeted on Thursday night, announcing the revision.

The announcement was made a day after the army released the names of 20 soldiers killed in the face-off with Chinese troops. Four of them – naib subedars Mandeep Singh (39) and Satnam Singh (41) and sepoys Gurbinder Singh (22) and Gurtej Singh (23) – hailed from Punjab. HTC
