VOTE ON WASHINGTON DC STATEHOOD
WASHINGTON: The House of Representatives will vote later on Friday to make the US capital Washington, DC the nation’s 51st state, a largely symbolic move that will likely be stopped by Senate Republicans.
More than 705,000 Americans live in Washington, DC, a Democratic stronghold. Washingtonians pay taxes, serve in the military, run businesses, and yet they are disenfranchised, but they have no voting representation in Congress. Success is unlikely for now. US President Donald Trump has expressed opposition to DC statehood and Senate Republicans are almost certain to ignore the measure.
BLM NETWORK DEBUNKS TRUMP TWITTER POST
NEWYORK: The Black Lives Matter Global Network distanced itself from an activist whose comments sparked the ire of President Donald Trump, saying the activist was not speaking on behalf of the movement. Trump lashed out after Hawk Newsome told Fox News. “Black Lives Matter leader states, ‘If US doesn’t give us what we want, then we will burn down this system and replace it’. This is Treason, Sedition, Insurrection!” Trump tweeted.
