LOOK BACK IN WONDER
Liverpool were lording it over English football when Premier League began. But it took them 30 frustrating years and 58 days to win the league again.
On April 28, 1990, Liverpool 1989-90
won their 18th First Division League. It was their seventh in 12 seasons and came under Scottish player-manager Kenny Dalglish.
Liverpool ended second. 1990-91
Dalglish quit mid-season but he had brought in a 17-year-old Jamie Redknapp and given his first game to an 18-year-old Steve McManaman.
One of Premier League’s 1992-93
founding members, Liverpool finished sixth in the inaugural season. They didn’t finish higher than third in the first nine seasons. In 1994-95, Dalglish took Blackburn Rovers to a surprise title.
Steven Gerrard began 2000-01
making an impact. Liverpool were third in the league but won the League Cup, FA Cup & UEFA Cup making it their most successful season since 1983-84.
Liverpool finished second 2001-02
and reached the Champions League quarter-final. It is their first appearance in Europe’s top competition since the 1985 Heysel Stadium disaster.
Liverpool ended fifth in the 2004-05
league but reached the Champions League final. At half-time, they trailed 0-3 to AC Milan, but made it 3-3 before winningn the ‘miracle of Istanbul.’
Liverpool were set for their 2013-14
first Premier League title. Till Gerrard slipped and Chelsea’s Demba Ba scored. Manchester City pipped the Reds at the post.
On Oct 8, 2015, Liverpool 2015-16
appointed Jurgen Klopp. He took Liverpool to the club’s first European final since 2007, losing to Sevilla in the 2016 Europa League title clash.
Klopp began reinforcing the 2017-18
squad. Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk was added this season. Liverpool reached the Champions League final. They lost 1-3 to Real Madrid.
Liverpool finished second to 2018-19
City by a point (97-98). This, after blowing a nine-point lead and losing only once, to City. The sixth European title came when Klopp’s team beat Spurs.
Liverpool’s surge to the title 2019-20
to end a 30-year break was halted by the break due to the pandemic. But after Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Man City on Friday, there was no looking back.
